I sit on a beach chair that is placed in the middle of the pond at Castle De Lovie.
The chair appears to float on the water’s surface.
After some time, the water under the chair becomes restless until, suddenly and forcefully, it is pushed upwards.
The water overwhelms me, and then calm returns for a short while.
I repeat this action day after day, from 10 am till 6 pm.
On the shore, visitors can listen to the trench song “We Are Here Because We Are Here”.
The performance ‘What is Past is Prologue’, commissioned by Kunstenfestival Watou 2024 and created for the castle estate De Lovie (Poperinge, BE), took place from July 6th till September 1st 2024.

Performancekunstenaar Mikes Poppe laat zich in Watou 42 dagen lang overspoelen door een gigantische watergolf. Wat dat precies inhoudt? Hij legt het je hier uit. “Je geeft je over aan de weersomstandigheden. Je kan niets anders dan het gewoon ondergaan en zien wat er gebeurt.”
